New visitor centre for Culloden
The National Trust for Scotland has awarded a contract to Morrison Construction to build a new 25,000sq ft (2,300sq m) visitor centre at Culloden Battlefield in Inverness.
The £4.6m visitor centre will be located 200m to the south of the current centre – which will remain open during the construction period – on the site of the last battle fought on British soil.
The building will have an exhibition space, a café and a shop.
In addition, the single-storey attraction will have an accessible ‘green’ roof offering views of the surrounding battlefield.
The new centre was designed by Glasgow-based Gareth Hoskins Architects. It will feature sustainable sourced hardwood, Caithness stone and a woodchip-burning biomass boiler plant for heating.
Work is set to start on site this summer. Details: www.nts.org.uk
