Dartmoor National Park Authority's environmentally-friendly information centre at Haytor, in Devon, has been officially opened following a red ribbon ceremony featuring BBC Natural World presenter and ecologist Satish Kumar.

Called the Haytor Centre, the facility was designed by Devon-based LSN architects and built by Imperial Construction with sustainability in mind. Features include rainwater collection systems, the use of locally sourced timber, recycled building materials and sheep's wool insulation. There is also energy efficient heating and lighting as well as a roof space to encourage bat roosting.

The centre is situated on enclosed land surrounded by trees, so to be less intrusive but still accessible.

The project was funded by the Dartmoor Sustainable Development Fund and the education and guidance services were paid for through a Heritage Lottery Fund grant.

Visitor services include a Haytor Audio Walk, a 6.3 mile (10 km) trail, with commentary and music which can be downloaded on to an mp3 player or ipod relating to a certain route and points of interest. There are also interactive and audio-visual displays inside the centre, tourist booklets and outside interpretation boards with out of hours information.
