New wildlife reserve opens in Lancashire
Brockholes Wetland and Woodland Reserve, a major new attraction operated by Lancashire Wildlife Trust (LWT), has opened its doors to the public near Preston.
At the heart of the new reserve is a multi-million pound floating Visitor Village, designed by London-based Adam Khan Architects and built by Mansell Construction. Price and Myer and Max Fordham and Jackson Coles supported Adam Khan Architects in the design phase of the scheme, with the facility boating an interpretation area and a shop.
The BREEAM Outstanding-rated property also features a children's play area; conference space; and a restaurant providing views across the Brockholes site. It is anticipated that more than 250,000 people will visit Brockholes each year, with the site described as an 'unreserved reserve' and offering a wide range of wildlife to view.
The Northwest Regional Development Agency contributed £8.6m of funding through the Forestry Commission's Newlands regeneration programme. Additional funding partners included Natural England; Tubney Charitable Trust; and the Lancashire Environmental Fund.
