New wireless system adds to the magic at Disneyland Paris

In a move that takes Disneyland Paris somewhat closer to its Florida brother in terms of technological sophistication, the French theme park has launched a new wireless system allowing guests to pay more easily for everything from park tickets to food.

Since it opened in 1992, Disneyland Paris has used paper park tickets and meal vouchers, but these are now being phased out in preparation for the major expansion of the attraction announced last year, which will be launched in stages from 2021.

Already deployed at the resort's hotels, the wireless payment system will see guests provided with a blue charge card with the Disney castle on it. Linked to their credit card, the MagicPass utilises RFID technology for wireless payment across the park.

Disney already uses a similar system at its Florida resort, with its MagicBand technology, used among other things to open their visitors' hotel room doors, pay for experiences and entertainment, check in at priority FastPass+ entrances and store photos, with everything linked to a smartphone app.

Reported in Forbes.com, Yves Wencker, director of lodging at Disneyland Paris, said that he hoped to eventually also have such a one-stop solution for the resort. However, it was not possible simply to import the US system into the Paris resort as you have "different entities, different technology and EU regulations can be different to those in the US". The intention is the same though: a "seamless experience from arrival until the checkout".
