New £70,000 play area for Alvaston
A new £70,000 recreation ground - designed with the help of local young people, has been unveiled in Alvaston, Derbyshire, by Derby City Council (DCC).
The Elvaston Lane play area is the first of eight play spaces to be opened as part of a rolling programme of improvements being carried out by the council with the help of the government's Playbuilder initiative. Pupils from Alvaston Junior Community School aged between 10 and 11 years old were invited to help shape the design of the park using model making equipment as part of a consultation process.
DCC cabinet member for leisure and culture Joe Naitta said: "Engaging young people in the design of parks is essential if we're to get long term use out of our parks. This way, local children can take ownership of the play areas and develop a respect for the surrounding environment."
