Midland Hotel in Morecambe Bay, UK, has reopened following an £11m refurbishment by owner and developer Urban Splash.

Urban Splash worked with architects Union North and restorative architectural consultants Avanti Architects to restore the Grade II-listed art deco building, which was built in the 1930s and had closed in near ruin in 1998.

The project was funded with contributions from the Heritage Lottery Fund, The Northwest Regional Development Agency (NWDA), English Heritage, and Lancaster City Council.

The 44-bedroom hotel on the Morecambe Bay coastline offers eight different types of rooms, including six rooftop suites, two with private terraces, and one, the executive penthouse, with an external hot tub.

The hotel’s main restaurant has a fully-glazed sun terrace and a menu designed by head chef Adrian Fenton, formerly of the restaurant at Lindeth Howe Country House Hotel in Windermere.

Facilities also include a rotunda bar with floor to ceiling glazing, and three function suites for special events.

Many of the original art deco features on the building have been restored, including sculptures by Eric Gill.

A staff of 40 was hired for the hotel following a recruitment drive in the local community.

“The Midland Hotel is a much loved building, it’s been a joy to work with it,” said Olivier Delaunoy, Midlands Hotel operations director, “There’s been a huge amount of anticipation locally, nationally and internationally for the hotel to reopen.”

“The Midland Hotel was long an icon of the Northwest coast and we are delighted to see it brought back to its former glory,” said NWDA tourism director James Berresford, “The redevelopment of the Midland is a crucial part of the masterplan to breathe new life into Morecambe and we hope it will be a major catalyst for further investment in the area.”

Urban Splash has also submitted an application for a mixed-use development on the area adjacent to the Midland Hotel, which is currently being finalised. The proposed site would be developed in four phases until completion in 2015.
