Baltimore Museum of Art (BMA) is to unveil its newly-renovated contemporary wing on 18 November - the first phase of a US$24.5m (EUR19.9m, £15.6m) upgrade programme.

A total of 16 galleries have been revitalised and will showcase works from the contemporary collection by Robert Rauschenberg and Andy Warhol, as well as new and existing artists.

The project has featured a new exhibition series, a new black box gallery for light, sound and moving image works; two interactive galleries; and BMA's first smartphone tour.

Marshall Craft Associates are the architects behind the new-look contemporary wing, with Lewis Contractors and project manager Synthesis Incorporated also involved. Ziger/Snead is the architect for the second phase of the project.

BMA contemporary art curator Kristen Hileman sad: "In working to reimagine the wing, we wanted our audiences to be exposed to artists with a wide array of styles, points of view, and experiences.

"Our new acquisitions, paired with our outstanding core collection, encompass works by some of the most important voices of the 20th and 21st centuries."

The wider upgrade programme will also include the re-installation of the museum's American and African collections, as well as improvements to the lobby and the visitor experience.
