O2 criticises tube closures
The O2 venue in London has launched an attack on Transport for London, saying that closures on the Jubilee tube line have caused huge problems for gig goers.
According to The London Paper, Geoff Symonds, head of transport strategy at the venue, told London Assembly members that the closure of North Greenwich station was creating a massive headache for travellers.
He said: ”We have a world-class venue, currently the most popular venue in the world, but unfortunately because of the weekend closures we do not have a world-class transport system to match. The biggest impact is on the customer experience – no alternative travel can replace the Jubilee line.
“This year we were given only four weeks’ notice that the works were overrunning. That’s not long enough to plan for in our business.”
He added that although music events were still selling out, the cinema, exhibitions, bars and restaurants had all been hit - with the Body Worlds exhibition losing 100,000 visitors, equating to a £850,000 loss. The O2 has already spent £400,000 on providing alternative transport.
The news comes after predictions that AEG Live, the O2’s operator, could stand to lose more than £300m as a result of the death of Michael Jackson, who was booked to play 50 dates at the venue.
