Plans for a new £100m mixed-use development on the site surrounding Belfast's Odyssey Complex have been submitted to the Northern Ireland Planning Service.

The Odyssey Trust has unveiled its masterplan for the project, which has been designed by Dublin-based architects HJ Lyons in partnership with planning consultants Turley Associates to further integrate the Odyssey site with the rest of central Belfast. An outline planning application has now been submitted for the scheme, which will include two hotels, a 23,741sq m (255,546sq ft) leisure facility and a 2.4-hectare (5.9-acre) public open space featuring a civic plaza in front of the Odyssey building and a riverside promenade.

Proposals also include 2,739sq m (29,482sq ft) of bars, restaurants and cafés, office space, a residential tower development and community and cultural facilities, as well as local retail services. Alan Gibson, chair of the Odyssey Trust, said: "The first 10 years of the Odyssey have been very successful and Northern Ireland has been bestowed with perhaps the best of the Millennium projects built across the UK.

"The Odyssey Trust is now looking to the future to secure and enhance this asset for the people of Northern Ireland by ensuring that the site area under its control is used to its best potential." Robert Fitzpatrick, the trust's chief executive, added: "While it would be easy to fear the impact of the current recession, we believe there is a bright future for the Odyssey and that now is the time to begin the work to secure and sustain its future success.

"Belfast and the Odyssey has benefited in recent years from the closure of the Point Depot in Dublin. Now completely re-developed and renamed as the O2, Dublin has a major new offer that sets a challenge for the Odyssey. We have every confidence that this master-plan and other future changes can rise to meet that challenge."
