IOC: 2024 and 2028 Olympic Games hosts will be named at the same time
Both the 2024 and 2028 Olympic Games will be awarded to their respective hosts at the same time in an unprecedented move announced by the International Olympic Committee (IOC).
It now appears certain that both the bids presented by Paris and Los Angeles will be successful, with one hosting in 2024 and another staging the Games in 2028.
The IOC cited “exceptional circumstances” for the decision, observing the reluctance of cities to bid for an event that has had a mixed legacy for previous host.
Paris and Los Angeles are the only two cities to bid for the 2024 Games after Budapest, Hamburg and Rome pulled out.
The decision was made by the IOC at the organisation’s 130th session in Lausanne, Switzerland.
A final decision on the hosts for both the 2024 and 2028 Games will be made at the 131st session in the autumn.
