Singapore is to become home to a progressive sports, lifestyle and entertainment complex when the S$1.87bn (US$1.49bn, €1.07bn, £878m) Singapore Sports Hub opens later this month (June).

The project is being billed as the region’s largest ever public-private partnership, with the intention of creating a world-class site where people can watch, play and learn about sport in the same location.

The hub will also serve as a major tourism destination, with the ability to hold international events and competitions, as well as housing a retail mall, restaurants, library and a sports museum.

At the centre of the hub is the 55,000-capacity National Stadium, which has the capability to host a range of sports including football, rugby, cricket and athletics.

Designed with a masterplan by AECOM and architectural work by Arup Sports and DP Architects, the creation also has the environment at heart, having made use of sustainable materials and a bowl structure that is energy efficient.

The hub comes as the Singaporean government seeks to make use of sport as a facilitator for national growth, with the country’s authorities ring-fencing S$500m (US$490m, €361m, £289m) to allow for the creation of a number of sporting projects.

The project for the development of the hub was awarded to the Singapore Sports Hub Consortium, led by Dragages Singapore, which was also given a 25-year contract with the Singapore Sports Council to design, build, finance and operate the new complex.

A comprehensive overview of the hub is provided in the Q2 edition of Sports Management magazine, pp.34-36.
