PCC invests in affordable fitness
Pembrokeshire County Council (PCC) is undertaking a £14m programme of investment in the county’s leisure services.
Work will include upgrades at three existing sites – Milford Haven, Pembroke and Crymych – as well as the construction of two brand new centres. The first of these, Fishguard Leisure Centre, opened at the end of 2005; work on the second, located in Haverfordwest, will begin at the end of the year and is due for completion in 2009.
With the exception of Milford Haven, which is a standalone site, all facilities in the programme are linked to schools. The network of modern, affordable leisure facilities will operate under the name of Pembrokeshire Leisure – the council’s sport and leisure division – and will include Precor fitness suites, a total of seven swimming pools, saunas and steamrooms.
The upgrade programme will also see an all-weather running track constructed at Milford Haven, an artificial turf pitch at Tenby, multi-use games areas in rural locations and the refurbishment of tennis courts across the county.
Low fees at the upgraded facilities will aim to encourage everyone from schoolchildren to business executives to get fit. A corporate scheme has already led to 39 companies signing up.
