Paris hotel unveils luxury NFTs to combat plastic waste and engage eco-conscious guests

A boutique Parisian hotel named Hotel Lancaster has partnered with plastic recovery marketplace Plastiks to launch a range of NFTs (non-fungible tokens).

The 15 NFTs – which went on sale yesterday (1 June) – have been created to support a reverse logistics startup in Brazil named Green Mining, which focuses on plastic recovery.

Each NFT is linked with a hotel room that will contain the room’s graphics and a Plastic Recovery Guarantee which indicates that plastic has been removed from the environment in Brazil.

This means anyone who buys one of the NFTs will be directly funding the recovery of harmful plastic while also supporting the employment of waste pickers.

In addition, successful buyers will receive a two-night stay at the hotel as well as a range of additional benefits, such as a VIP Club Membership.

The initiative is designed to appeal to environmentally-conscious guests and create a sense of brand connection and loyalty.

Hotel Lancaster and Plastiks claim this is the first time a hotel is using utility NFT technology to engage with travellers.

Lydérick Jadaud, hotel director at Hotel Lancaster, said: “These NFTs allow our clients to directly contribute to the global fight against plastic waste and improve the lives of the people collecting plastic in developing countries. I’m immensely proud that Hotel Lancaster is able to bring these groups together through this fantastic project.

“Sustainability is becoming an important part of the hospitality industry, especially in cities where it can be more difficult to introduce greener practices. Plastiks’ NFTs allow us to demonstrate to our guests that we share a commitment to solving the current climate crisis and helping to reduce damaging single-use plastic contamination.

“Our next step will be to conduct a full audit of the amount of plastic that we use in our hotel today so we can continue to neutralise our plastic usage completely by recovering it all around the world.”

André Vanyi-Robin, CEO of Plastiks, said: “We’re delighted that Hotel Lancaster has chosen Plastiks to help it lead the way, in what is an inherently difficult industry to adapt to sustainable living.

“With pioneering blockchain technology, we can bring transparency, traceability and accountability to how the world deals with problem plastics in the environment, ensuring that generations to come are able to enjoy global travel in the way that many are able to today.”
