Park scheme nets TV cash boost
A new multi-use games court is set to be created at a park in Castleford, West Yorkshire, after a local community group was awarded £50,000 of lottery funding.
Friends of Castleford Savile Park successfully applied to ITV and the Big Lottery Fund's (BLF) The People's Millions programme, which was decided by a public vote at the end of November last year. The Savile Park Games Court scheme includes the installation of a multi-use games area on one of the site's currently underused tennis courts, which will offer five-a-side football and basketball facilities, as well as seating and a practice cricket area.
Clive Hudson, Wakefield Council's cabinet member for environment, said: "We now have the fantastic opportunity to create something for everyone, and I'm happy to see that people felt strongly enough about the park to vote for it." Caroline James, Head of Yorkshire region at the BLF, added: "This is great news for the people of Castleford. It just goes to show what community projects can achieve when they have the support of local people."
