Parkour site planned for central London
Westminster City Council (WCC) has confirmed plans for the creation of a purpose-built outdoor parkour facility in Westbourne Green, central London.
Located at Westminster Academy, the new site will incorporate obstacles for participants of all abilities and aims to replicate an urban environment featuring walls, rails and stairs. The site will provide a safe, managed space for parkour and freerunning practitioners to take part in the sport, with space for up to 100 people at any one time and qualified instructors from Parkour UK on hand.
London Marathon Trust has provided £80,000 towards the new parkour facility, in addition to the £90,000 invested by WCC. Work is due to start in October and will be completed in early 2011. WCC cabinet member for community services Steve Summers said: "This will also provide a great way to get people motivated and enthusiastic about the sport while also engaging young people in a fun and physical activity that can also help to build their self-confidence."
The new Westminster parkour site will follow a similar facility already open in Crawley, which was developed by Crawley Borough Council in partnership with the Prodigal Theatre group's Urban Playground Team. Rugby Borough Council is also working with the theatre group to provide a parkour facility in the town, which has included local traceurs in the design process and will open later this year.
