Partial reprieve for Stratford leisure centre
Newham Council has announced that parts of Atherton Leisure Centre in Stratford, London, will remain open after 31 December, which is poised to make way for a replacement facility.
It had been proposed the venue would shut at the end of this year, but the local authority has decided to keep the gym and free weights area open until at least June 2012.
The main swimming pool at Atherton Leisure Centre has been closed since May as a result of ongoing asbestos work. The training pool and sports hall will close on 31 December.
Meanwhile, a 12-week consultation with local residents is planned in order to consider the options for the future of the centre, with a new-build option seen as the most cost-effective.
