Passengers left stranded as airline collapses
British holidaymakers have been left stranded overseas, following the collapse of Scotland-based airline operator Flyglobespan.
Bruce Cartwright, Graham Frost and Ian Oakley-Smith of PricewaterhouseCoopers (PWC) have been appointed as joint administrators of the airline operator - part of the Globespan Group - after efforts to secure a rescue package failed. The Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) will make arrangements for holidaymakers on a Globespan package deal to return home with other airlines under the Air Travel Organisers' Licensing (ATOL) scheme.
However, those with flight only arrangements with Globespan Airways are not covered by the scheme and are being advised to arrange alternative travel home, with a number of rival carriers hoping to cash in on special 'repatriation' fares. Cartwright said: "We are acutely aware of the distress this situation will cause those travellers who are currently abroad, as well as the impact on those holiday makers who have booked travel for later this year or 2010.
"Over the coming days we will be focusing our efforts on ensuring Globespan customers have all the information they require to both return home or to determine the next steps in terms of whether or not they can secure refunds."
