Pier decision moves Scilly ferry scheme forward
Plans to improve to the ferry link between the Isles of Scilly and Cornwall have been boosted after the government granted listed building consent for work on Penzance's South Pier.
The Route Partnership - including Cornwall Council, Penwith District Council, the Isles of Scilly Council and the Duchy of Cornwall - is leading the scheme, which will lead to new and extended harbour facilities in Penzance. Cornwall Council voted in favour of the proposals earlier this year after initial plans were rejected in late 2009. However, the government office's decision to back the project marks the latest milestone in efforts to improve the ferry link.
Julia Day, chair of the Isles of Scilly Council, said: "This project is crucial to the Islands and the sea link is vital to every aspect of daily life. We look forward to the project coming to fruition." Cornwall Council leader Alec Robertson added: "This is a major milestone for the scheme and we can now concentrate our efforts on pressing our case for funding with the Department for Transport."
