Plans afoot to turn Gloucester Prison into museum

The owner of a jail museum in the Forest of Dean in Gloucester, is looking to expand his portfolio with a bid to open a museum in the recently closed Gloucester Prison.

The prison, which closed at the end of March, has already had proposals not only for a museum, but also for flats and a hotel.

One stumbling block for any potential resident is that estimates say there could be up to 122 executed criminals buried underneath the prison in unmarked graves.

"If a hotel were to move in, the bodies buried there would have to be exhumed.” said Andy Jones, who has expressed his interest in converting the site into a museum. “I would want to leave them there as a memory of what happened.

"There's a terrific amount of history that could be put on display to the public."

The plans would be far less controversial than Littledean Jail Museum, also run by Jones, which displays items from murderers including Rose West, Myra Hyndley and Harold Shipman among other crime paraphernalia.

Jones said that on offer would be ghost tours and exhibits would be based on the history of the 222-year old prison, which was built on the remains of Gloucester Castle.
