Plans unveiled for Hemel Hempstead's £2m leisure facilities

Plans to build a new £2m leisure and transport hub in the centre of Hemel Hempstead have been revealed.

The plans include relocating the bus station to the centre of town and the demolition of the current site in Waterhouse Street to make way for a new leisure complex.

The existing bus station site and Market Square are set to be developed into a new “leisure anchor,” which is due to be complete in 2015. The proposal also aims to attract big name family restaurants and a cinema to the area.

Dacorum Borough Council has approved the project, which will be developed in partnership with Arriva and the county council

The new bus interchange will be built on Marlowes and Bridge Street and is intended be finished by September next year,

The location is expected to be more convenient for passengers, and in turn benefit town centre businesses.

Under the new plans, the Marlowes taxi rank will be relocated. New taxi ranks will be created to make it more convenient for people to find a taxi, and to reduce the traffic congestion.

Cllr Terry Douris, planning, development, and regeneration said: “We’re committed to improving Hemel Hempstead’s town centre, and making it an attractive destination for local people and visitors alike.

“These plans will improve the experience of travelling into Hemel Hempstead, encourage more bus and taxi users and will also bring new businesses into the area.”
