Plymouth sports facility strategy unveiled
Plymouth City Council (PCC) has invited local sports clubs, residents and schools to have their say on a new draft sports facility strategy, which aims to improve the city's sports provision.
Proposals being considered as part of the new strategy include a network of indoor sports hubs to act as 'satellites' to the new £46.5m Life Centre; a new swimming pool for the Plymstock, Elburton and Sherford area and a network of climbing walls. New indoor 3G pitches and new pitches for hockey are also put forward as part of a number of ideas to improve the city's sports provision, which also aims to help the development of talented athletes ahead of the 2012 Olympics.
A steering group including council officials, community sports groups, the health service and representatives from Sport England helped to develop the strategy, which will be the subject of the consultation until 22 January 2010. PCC cabinet member for leisure, culture and sport, Glenn Jordan, said: "This document will set out our plans for improving local sports facilities over the next 10 or 15 years and will be key to increasing sport and physical activity in Plymouth.
"It's important for us to get as many views as possible so that the strategy fully considers the future sporting needs and aspirations of the city."
