Porthcurno Telegraph Museum lands government funding
Cornwall’s Porthcurno Telegraph Museum, which exhibits cable communication and wireless technology, has received a £150,000 share of government funding aimed at improving England’s coastal communities.
The grant will go towards the museum’s capital project ‘Developing for the Future’, which is expected to create five new jobs and volunteering opportunities.
Development project manager Henrietta Boex said: “For 140 years Porthcurno was an important hub of global communications and known internationally.
“Our project aims to tell this story but also to spread the benefit of development to local communities through opportunities for enjoyment, learning, volunteering and employment.”
The museum is one of 20 seaside projects to benefit from the second round of Coastal Communities funding.
Communities secretary Eric Pickles said: “It’s a missed opportunity if we don’t tap into the huge potential our coastal towns have to welcome new industries and to diversify their economies so they can become year-round success stories.”
