Premier Inn survey promotes staycations
A survey of 4,000 people by budget hotel chain Premier Inn has revealed that fish and chips wrapped in paper is the best thing about holidaying in Britain.
In second place was the fact that it didn't involve hanging around in airport departure lounges, while 99 Flake ice creams and the UK's rolling countryside were third and fourth respectively. Other typically British traits which make staying on the mainland worthwhile were shown to include fun on the pier, understanding the currency and the language, crazy golf, sticks of rock and candy floss.
The study also found that some of Britain's historic seaside traditions appear to be in danger of dying out. More than half of all children under the age of 14 have never built a sandcastle at a UK beach, while seven out of ten have never played in rock pools. The same number has never swum in the sea at a UK coastal resort. One in four admitted that they had never been on a donkey ride.
