Premier League rejects Old Firm proposals
English Premier League clubs have rejected the possibility of Glasgow's two most prominent football clubs - Rangers and Celtic - joining the competition as part of a restructuring process.
Bolton Wanderers Football Club chair Phil Gartside was behind the proposal to invite the two Old Firm clubs to leave the Scottish Premier League as part of a new two-tier English Premier League structure. However, the Premier League revealed in a statement on 12 November that member clubs had dismissed the idea of Rangers and Celtic being invited to compete in England.
A spokesperson for the Premier League said: "The clubs welcomed the additional input into an ongoing process, however they were of the opinion that bringing Celtic and Rangers into any form of Premier League set-up was not desirable or viable. "The other relevant ideas contained within Bolton Wanderers’ paper will now be taken forward as part of the wider strategic review being undertaken by the Premier League since November 2008 with the aim of providing recommendations before December 2010."
