Primary school children compete in first inter-country athletics event
Freedom Leisure has hosted what it believes to be the first inter-county athletics final event for year six primary school children, from across Kent, Surrey and Sussex, at Summerfields Leisure Centre.
Organised by Andy Hodder, competitions manager of Hastings & Rother Schools Sport Partnership, the one-day event was the first in a series of 12 similar activity challenges which will be staged locally in the coming months and featuring a variety of different sporting disciplines.
“The event was a very successful one, which saw 240 young people have a highly fantastic day of structured athletics in a safe environment,” said Hodder.
Other organisations involved included England Athletics; Sportshall Athletics from Warwickshire, who ran the event; members of Sussex Athletics, who hope to be closely involved in future years and Hastings Athletics Club, who officiated.
Sports trust Freedom Leisure also sponsored the Young Sports Person of the Year award at the BBC South East Sports Awards 2007, which were presented by the BBC’s Geoff Clark live at the Priestfield Stadium in Gillingham on 3 December 2007.
