Three potential sites have been identified for a new 10,000-seat sports stadium in Cambridge, which will serve the area's growing population and its major sports clubs.
The stadium was proposed in the Cambridge Sub-regional Sports Facilities Strategy drawn up by Cambridgeshire Horizons, a non-profit company, set up by the Cambridgeshire Local Authorities to drive forward the development of new communities and infrastructure in the Cambridge Sub-region.
The Cambridge Community Stadium's feasibility study, carried out by sports consultants PMP, proposes a development that provides training pitches for local sports teams, a 30- 40-station fitness suite as well as sports-related commercial opportunities.
The three sites considered for the scheme are the Green Belt region of Milton, Cambridge East – the current airport site – and Cowley Road.
Cambridge United Football Club has been proposed as the project's lead partner, while Cambridge City FC and Cambridge Rugby Club are also in the running for the position as second partner. However, the problems arising from two clubs sharing a stadium will mean further consideration is needed, according to Cambridgeshire Horizons.
"There is an increasing need for a stadium facility in Cambridge, especially in the light of expected population growth and we are therefore keen to work with the clubs and local authorities to find the right solution for the community," said John Onslow, director for development at Cambridgeshire Horizons.
The next step will be to carry out an investigation into the proposed sites and continue discussions with local sports clubs.
