Rogers Stirk Harbour + Partners (RSHP) has revealed plans for sibling towers in Colombia’s capital, with more than 10,000sqm (108,000sq ft) of public space connecting them.

The project, named ATRIO, is one of the most significant real-estate ventures in Colombia’s recent history. It has two towers, at 200 metres (656 feet) and 268 metres (879 feet) tall, which will be predominantly offices, with some commercial and retail space.

However, the client – Colombian real-estate developer Arpro – also specifically wanted to “create a new public space at the heart of the city,” said RSHP partner Simon Smithson.

“The project is a really exciting opportunity to contribute to the resurgence of a civic society in Bogotá,” Smithson said.

The architects believe the mixed-use development and its focus on ample public space – occupying two-thirds of the site’s footprint – will encourage the regeneration of its Centro Internacional area.

According to RSHP – who are also working on Barangaroo South, a new city quarter under construction in Sydney, Australia – the ATRIO project will stimulate business, tourism, public transport and culture and generate footfall of up to 72,000 people per day.

The non-identical towers are united by a complementary geometric design, with the shorter 44-floor North Tower aligning on the diagonal with its taller 59-floor South Tower sibling.

Arpro and its parent company Group "" (or Grupo Chaidneme), alongside Colombian construction firm QBO, are behind the project. Local architects El Equipo de Mazzanti are also involved.

Phase one of the total 25-hectare (62-acre) ATRIO development is scheduled for completion by the end of 2018.
