Lafarge Cement UK has submitted an outline planning application for a £50m mixed-use development at Magheramorne near Larne in Northern Ireland.

Proposals for redevelopment of the 153 hectare (378 acre) former cement and quarry site comprise a harbour village featuring an international film and television studio and an adventure sports arena – consisting of a world cycling centre and an all-Ireland diving centre – as well as 450 eco-friendly homes.

Additional leisure facilities may include a nature conservation area, a heritage railway line and a visitor centre as well as an industrial archaeology park.

Lafarge project manager, Lloyd McInally, said: “The eco-village will show that ‘green’ living can work. It will provide new homes and supporting facilities for people in an attractive location, while the sports and leisure facilities will draw in visitors from across the UK and Ireland. The spin-off benefits for both the local and regional economy will be considerable.”

Global environment organisation the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) has provided ongoing advice since work began on formulating plans for a new future for the old works and quarry almost four years ago.

Jim Kitchen, head of WWF Northern Ireland, said: “The plans provide an outstanding opportunity to demonstrate how we can tread more lightly on the earth. The eco-friendly project will bring sustainable development to life.”

Subject to outline planning permission being granted – expected to take 12-18 months – Lafarge plans to form a joint-venture arrangement with a development partner. Work on site is anticipated to start in 2007. Details: www.lafarge.com
