RRS Discovery restoration completed
Captain Scott's former ship, the RRS Discovery, has been reopened as a visitor attraction in Dundee, Scotland, following a major redevelopment of the ship.
The vessel, the last wooden three-masted ship to be built in Britain, has undergone a £700,000 revamp - funded by a £528,000 grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF).
The work took more than two years to complete and included the repair of the decayed hull and decks.
The improvements will also prevent sea water from entering the underwater hull and fresh water from entering the inner hull.
The engine and stern gland areas have been restored and opened to the public for the first time.
Professor Stewart Brymer, chair of Dundee Heritage Trust, which contributed to the funding of the scheme, said: "It is more than 20 years since Discovery returned to the city of her birth and the people of Dundee are rightly proud of the local and national maritime heritage that Discovery represents.
"This project will help to secure Discovery, ensuring she continues to be a key heritage, education and tourism asset for many years to come."
