RS&L looks to raise £2.5m for sports centre

Redbridge Sports & Leisure (RS&L) has launched a fundraising appeal to raise a minimum of £2.5m towards the estimated £3.5m cost of a new sports hall for badminton and netball up to Olympic level.

Speaking at a reception at the Houses of Parliament, RS&L chief executive Ken Leggate said: "This exciting new sports hall scheme will meet the growing local, national and international demand for a modern hall which offers badminton and netball players the best possible playing, training and coaching environment. "We pride ourselves on encouraging sustainable sports and leisure participation for all, and this development will enable us to maintain and increase that commitment."

The sports trust, which will be funding the remainder of the costs through its own reserves and commercial borrowings, hopes to begin work on the project in 2010 for completion the following year. The facility will offer 12 badminton courts, three netball courts, a dance studio, a wellness suite, and will be fully accessible. The sports hall will have a wooden sprung floor, retractable tiered seating and a viewing gallery. Adrian Christy, chief executive of Badminton England, said: "We are delighted to give our full support to this exciting project, which chimes with the objectives and priorities of our Whole Sport Plan and will be a designated High Performance Centre for our sport."

Cheryl Danson, chair of Netball England, added: "RS&L has a long tradition of providing a key hub for netball participation and outreach at all levels, and is to be congratulated on launching this important new initiative."
