RUFC announces name of new stadium
Rotherham United Football Club (RUFC) has announced its new £20m home on the site of the town's former Guest and Chrimes Foundry site will be called New York Stadium.
Designed by S&P Architects, the new 12,000-seat venue will see the north and south stands boast a polycarbonate edge to the roof to enable light to reach the pitch
The east stand is also to comprise a polycarbonate roof system as part of the stadium, which is scheduled to open ahead of the 2012-13 season. Gleeds is project manager.
According to the npower League Two club, the New York name provides a historical link to the Guest and Chrimes Foundry, which made the US city's distinctive fire hydrants.
RUFC chair Tony Stewart said: "We also feel that the name can open doors for the commercial team at Rotherham United, and we looking into the possibility of setting up links between Rotherham and New York."
