Wales will get a £300m film studio if plans by developers JV Partnership, a joint venture between Westair and Fairfield Properties, come to fruition.

The scheme would include a 750,000sq ft international film academy and studio and a 400,000sq ft leisure scheme with a film tour, restaurants and bars. Plans also include a hotel, health spa and conference facilities.

Talks are underway to secure funding and content for the studio which has won the support of Lord Attenborough. The developers believe the attraction alone could draw 1.2m people a year, while the overall development could create 2,000 jobs.

The studio would be built on a brownfield site - a former quarry - owned by Celtic Energy at Llanilid near Cardiff, close to the M4 motorway. It may qualify for European Regeneration funding.

This is the fourth recent attempt to bring a studios tour to the UK - Warner Bros applied for permission to build at Hillingdon, plans were put forward for schemes at Leavesden and Rainham Marshes in Essex, while Tussauds were rumoured to be in talks to bring a studios tour to the UK in the 90s. A studios tour is the only theme park 'format' not available in the UK - industry insiders believe there's only room for one.
