'Record' figures for Wales' national museums
Wales' seven national museums attracted a record 1.69 million visitors in 2011-12, which is the highest total amount reported since the introduction of free admission in April 2001.
The measure was implemented by the Welsh Government and Amgueddfa Cymru-National Museum Wales eight months before England and has resulted in 16.5 million free museum visits over the last 11 years.
Among the successes from 2011-12 was the new National Museum of Art - opened in July 2011 - which has boosted National Museum Cardiff visitor numbers by 13.7 per cent.
Elsewhere, the National Wool Museum surpassed the 30,000 visits for the first time and has seen its total visitor numbers since 2000-01 increase by 236 per cent.
Huw Lewis, Welsh minister for housing, regeneration and heritage said: "The free entry policy has of course proved popular with traditional museum visitors - but what really pleases me is the fact that it has also attracted completely new, harder to reach, audiences."
