A report outlining the requirements for the provision of a new swimming pool in Exmouth has been presented to the town council.

A new swimming pool is part of plans that are expected to be put forward by supermarket company ASDA, and developer ASM Properties for the redevelopment of the town's bus station and lorry park site. A new leisure centre is also among the proposals.

Exmouth Town Council's General Purpose and Regeneration Committee was presented with Exmouth Swimming and Lifesaving Society's (ESLS) report at a meeting on 11 August. The report outlines a number of recommendations for the new facility, including a 10-lane 25m pool and spectators seating area.

The report's author, ESLS's masters swimming coach Robert Clarke said: "This is an unmissable opportunity to provide the inhabitants of East Devon with a first class sporting venue. To construct an amenity at relatively small cost, this will give income opportunities for the 21st century and beyond."

East Devon Council signed an exclusivity agreement with ASDA and ASM Properties in January for the development. A spokesperson for East Devon Council said that the plans, if approved, would see a new pool and leisure centre built and opened before the town's existing leisure facilities would be demolished to make way for an ASDA supermarket.

Chris Marlow, a spokesperson for ASDA, said that it is expected there will be a public consultation on the new development by the end of the year, with a planning application submitted in early 2009.

"The development will provide the community with modern leisure and educational facilities, as well as a new visitor centre," said Marlow.
