Residents reject Cardiff school plans
Residents in the Llanrumney and Rumney districts of Cardiff, have unanimously rejected the city council's proposals to relocate two local secondary schools to a new, purpose-built facility on the site of the Eastern Leisure Centre.
More than 4,000 voters took part in a referendum on 17 February, with 93 per cent registering their opposition to the proposals, which Cardiff Council recently put on public display. Cardiff Council intends to replace both the Llanrumney and Rumney High Schools with a single, purpose-built facility in a bid to improve local education standards. Facilities at the leisure centre would also be upgraded as part of the school proposals.
Plans include reducing the amount of public open space available at the proposed site, although the council insists that the amount of new space at the Llanrumney and Rumney school sites would provide a net gain of 5.1 hectares (12.6 acres) accessible public space for the city. Council recommendations also include the retention of an artificial turf pitch at the Llanrumney High School site, as well as three grass pitches with new changing rooms to offset the loss of a pitch at Eastern Leisure Centre.
A local action group comprising more than 500 members of the Llanrumney and Rumney communities was formed in 2007 to oppose the plans for the new school facility, which it believes should not be built on the greenfield site at Eastern Leisure Centre and Rumney Recreational Ground.
