Residents voice opposition to harbour plans
Residents in Penzance have been given the chance to voice their opposition to a proposed harbour development at a meeting with members of Cornwall Council's strategic planning committee.
The committee met at the town's Acorn Theatre to discuss plans for the scheme to develop new harbour facilities as part of efforts to improve links between the Isles of Scilly and the British mainland. Cornwall Council has already warned that funding earmarked by the government for the multi-million pound scheme could be at risk if the development encounters any further delays, after an earlier planning application was withdrawn in June.
Plans include a new passenger and freight terminal building and the extension of existing harbour facilities, which has been met with opposition due to the scheme incorporating part of the town's Battery Rocks beach. English Heritage has also opposed building on the Battery Rocks beach as part of the proposals drawn up by a Route Partnership comprising Cornwall Council, the Council of the Isles of Scilly, Penwith District Council and the Duchy of Cornwall.
