Revamp plans revealed for Portsmouth's D-Day museum
Portsmouth City Council has announced plans to bid for £4.4m worth of Heritage Lottery Funding in order to redevelop and modernise the city's D-Day Museum.
The redevelopment will include a complete new layout for the museum, including new interactive displays that will be designed to appeal to a young, more tech-savvy audience.
Plans also include using the height of the existing building more effectively to create dramatic displays and present a number of large vehicles, including the landing craft, in a more integrated way.
Other parts of the project will include an oral history project with D-Day Veterans, forging new links with the serving Armed Forces community in and around Portsmouth, and creating new partnerships with local regimental museums and community groups.
An advisory panel including war veterans, school children, teachers, families and community groups will be set up to consult on the display plans as part of efforts to ensure the museum will appeal to modern audiences.
Portsmouth's D-Day Museum is the UK's only museum dedicated solely to covering all aspects of the D-Day landings in Normandy, France, on 6 June 1944.
It is hoped the redevelopment will be completed in time for the 70th anniversary celebration of the landings in 2014.
