Revamped Harborough museum reopens
A special day of events has been held to mark the reopening of Harborough Museum in Market Harborough, Leicestershire, following the completion of a refurbishment scheme.
The attraction has been revamped as part of a £934,000 scheme to acquire, preserve and exhibit a collection of archaeological treasures dating back to the Iron Age, which were discovered by metal detectorist Ken Wallace in a field in 2000. More than 5,000 gold and silver coins and a Roman parade helmet were among the items dubbed the Hallaton Treasure, which were excavated by the Hallaton Fieldwork group and the University of Leicester Archaeological Services.
The scheme, which also includes two touring exhibitions, school workshops and internet-based education resources, has received funding from the Art Fund (£100,000), the Heritage Lottery Fund (£650,600) and the Museums and Galleries Improvements Fund (£35,000). Leicestershire County Council, the Headley Trust, Renaissance East Midlands, the Friends of Leicester and Leicestershire Museums and the Leicestershire Museums Archaeological Fieldwork Group also contributed towards the scheme.
Among the events held to mark the opening of the museum on 19 October was a falconry display and a Roman re-enactment display, as well as an arms display by the Sealed Knot Civil War Society.
