Revisions made to tips and troncs guidelines
The British Hospitality Association (BHA) has welcomed changes to the National Insurance Contributions (NICs) position for tips and troncs made by HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC).
A tronc is a system whereby tips are pooled and distributed to employees by a ‘troncmaster’.
According to the changes made to the HMRC’s E24 booklet – which the BHA had been campaigning for – management can now set the ground rules for the tronc system as long as they don’t contribute the tips themselves and NICs do not have to be paid when tronc monies go towards national minimum wage amounts.
Martin Couchman, deputy chief executive at the BHA, said: “The announcement is great news for the British hospitality industry. HMRC has listened to the suggestions we have made and produced clearer and more practical guidance for our members to use.” Details: www.hmrc.gov.uk
