Riverside frolics in Paris and Budapest
The Paris-Plage has been hailed a riverside success.
Paris’ transport minister, Denis Baupin, said more than three million visitors came to the Paris-Plage – a temporary summer beach on the River Seine which has just been dismantled.
Three kilometres of riverbank were transformed into a station balnéaire – a manmade beach resort where visitors could “take their holidays in the heart of Paris.” Last year, 2.3 million people visited the city beach, which Baupin says was a great success during the recent heatwave.
“Many people who could not get away on holiday could benefit from the Paris-Plage – a place which in terms of quality of live, allows people to rediscover a holiday resort in the heart of the city,” said Baupin.
Meanwhile, in Budapest, 1,200 tonnes of sand, palm trees, parasols and sun beds were installed along the banks of the Danube for the summer season.
However, both the Danube and the river Seine, are too polluted for swimming; would be swimmers have to take advantage of bankside mobile showers. Details: www.paris.fr
