Roof contract awarded for new Arizona stadium
The Taiyo Birdair Corporation, a subsidiary of Japan’s Taiyo Kogyo Corp., has been awarded a $4.7m contract for the Arizona Tourism and Sports Authority’s Phoenix multi-purpose stadium.
Located in Glendale, Arizona, the 1,555,000sq ft facility will seat 63,000 – expandable to 73,000 – and be home to the NFL Arizona Cardinals and host of the Fiesta Bowl and 2008 Super Bowl. It will be the first NFL stadium with a combination retractable roof and moveable playing field.
Taiyo Birdair’s brief includes the design, fabrication and installation of the retractable roof, with work starting in summer 2005 and expected to be completed within six months.
It is anticipated that the stadium will be open in time for the Cardinal’s 2006 season.
