Safe and Local Supplier Approval (SALSA) scheme launched
SALSA, an independent Safe and Local Supplier Approval certification process for smaller suppliers not covered by the British Retail Consortium Standard, was launched at the Food and Drink Federation last week.
Under the new scheme, SALSA will give companies an assurance that locally sourced food bought on a restricted or one-outlet basis will meet the necessary legal, food safety and diligence requirements.
SALSA will provide annual assessments of smaller suppliers by locally-based inspectors, followed by the issuing of practical advice and guidance to the supplier and technical mentoring where appropriate.
The scheme will also provide a web-based framework for further training in SME’s, technical and commercial advice, purchase of publications and technical support.
Developed by the British Hospitality Association (BHA) in collaboration with the National Farmers Union, the British Retail Consortium, and the Food and Drink Federation; with support from DEFRA and the Food Standards Authority, the scheme will be operated by the Institute of Food Science and Technology England and Wales, and in conjunction with the SFQC in Scotland.
