San Francisco Zoo reopens after tiger attack
The San Francisco Zoo is due to reopen later today, just over a week after a tiger attacked and killed a teenage visitor at the attraction.
One of the zoo’s Siberian tigers escaped from the big cat grotto on Christmas Day and killed 17-year-old Carlos Sousa Jr, before seriously injuring two other visitors.
An investigation is ongoing into how the tiger, called Tatiana, managed to escape from its enclosure.
A number of press reports in the local media have speculated that the three victims, a group of teenage boys, had taunted inhabitants at the big cat grotto before the attack.
The zoo’s director, Manuel Mollinedo, said the big cat grotto would reopen along with the rest of the zoo, but that the tiger enclosure will remain closed for at least a month for rebuilding.
The zoo has appointed CA Architects to design and build the new enclosure, which is believed to have taller fencing around it.
