Scottish First Minister in football 'pledge'
The Scottish Government has pledged to do 'everything in its power' to help support the development of football across the country.
It comes after a meeting between First Minister Alex Salmond; sports minister Shona Robison and representatives from the Scottish Football Association (SFA). Talks were arranged to discuss how recommendations set out in the McLeish Review of Football could be implemented. The review's chair, Henry McLeish, was also present.
Salmond said: "The Scottish Government will do everything in its power to achieve these aims and will continue to work to encourage young people to be more physically active across all sports by creating community sports hubs and focusing the variety of our funding streams to ensure we are maximising our investment into sport." SFA chief executive Stewart Regan added: "The key aspect is that football cannot do this on its own: we require a collective approach from all stakeholders, and other sports, to ensure children in this country have the best access possible to the best facilities and best coaching, so that they in turn have the best chance of achieving excellence."
