Scottish Rugby looking at battleground in search for new home
The Scottish Rugby Union (SRU) – reportedly £20m in debt – is considering moving out of Edinburgh’s Murrayfield stadium.
One of the possible sites for a new stadium is near the famous Bannockburn battleground in Stirling.
Although popular opinion seems to be that Scottish rugby shouldn’t be allowed to leave Murrayfield – host for international rugby since 1925 – financial restraints might drive the RSU out of the Capital in search for more affordable land.
However, only last autumn, Chris Robinson, chief executive of Edinburgh-based Hearts football club, voiced his interest in sharing Murrayfield with the RSU.
Any possible move then, could involve Hearts selling their Tynecastle stadium and taking part in the costs of a new site.
According to some reports, there have already been calls to name the new venue the 1314 stadium – in honour of the Scots’ famous victory over Edward II’s English army.
The Scotland team recently chose Stirling as their training base, further fuelling the theory of a permanent switch away from the Capital. Details: www.sru.org.uk
