Scottish museums map out 25-year plan
Museums in Scotland have outlined their vision for the future in a draft document sent to the Cultural Commission.
Scotland’s Museums: Developing a Shared Vision was produced by the Museums and Galleries Working Group (MGWG) and gave museums the chance to voice their views on the industry’s future.
The report includes an eight-point programme to be achieved by 2030, including ensuring people throughout Scotland have access to the nation’s significant collections; allowing people of all ages to see museums as being central to Scotland’s cultural offering; integrating museums into the formal education system and establishing museums as centres of life long learning.
Following the submission of the draft report to the Cultural Commission, a final report is expected in 2005.
The Cultural Commission appointed the MGWG in August with the task of considering the sector from a citizen’s perspective and to looking ahead to the conditions that ought to prevail for the next generation.
MGWG is one of 14 cultural sector groups developed by the Cultural Commission and is made up of representatives from the Scottish Museum Council, National Museums of Scotland, Scottish Local Authority Museums and the Association of Independent Museums.
