Scotland's five World Heritage Sites are to combine as part of a programme of 'interactive' events designed to celebrate World Heritage Day on 18 April.

Edinburgh Old and New Town; New Lanark; Heart of Neolithic Orkney; St Kilda; and The Antoinine Wall will join forces as part of the Shadows of our Ancestors project. Communities representing each of the five World Heritage Sits will be invited to participate in creative workshops, using different media to explore cultural identity.

The workshops will culminate in an event held at each site on 18 April, including a visual art installation and soundscape at the Antoinine Wall to recreate a Roman encampment. Scottish culture minister Fiona Hyslop said: "The events are designed to raise awareness of the importance of these truly valuable and unique sites.

"But there is also a wider issue of recognising the vulnerability of some of these sites and the ongoing dedication required to protect and conserve them for future generations." Historic Scotland will run the project in partnership with each of the five sites.
