Section of FC Twente stadium collapses
A section of roof at the De Grolsch Veste stadium in Enschede, Netherlands – home to FC Twente – has reportedly collapsed.
A picture posted on social media website Twitpic revealed the extent of the damage, which is thought to have occurred at a time when redevelopment work was being carried out at the venue. According to the BBC, it is believed that one person had been killed in the incident, with at least a further dozen understood to be injured.
A spokesperson for FC Twente said: "During the renovation work at the Grolsch Veste, the roof of the building collapsed. Our thoughts are with everyone involved." A pre-season friendly scheduled to be held at the stadium next Saturday has been cancelled.
First opened in 1998 with a capacity in excess of 13,000, the venue can now accommodate 24,000 people. However, work is being undertaken this summer to grow the capacity further to 32,000. The work will see the second short side terracing raised, and it is hoped that the scheme will bring benefits for both the club and the city of Enschede.
