Sheffield in the swim as attendance figures buck the national trend
Sheffield's swimming pools have made a splash after announcing an increase in the number of aquatic attendances.
Sheffield International Venues (SIV) is bucking the national trend after seeing swim figures increase by more than six per cent from 144,401 across four months of 2010 to 153,356 across the same months in 2010.
The news comes as the latest results from the quarterly Sport England Active People survey show that 21 sports have seen a decline in participation since 2007, including swimming, while just nine experienced an increase. However, Sheffield is one of the only cities to see an increase.
SIV, which operates eight pools across the city, boasts award winning facilities and offers swimming lessons for all ages, diving lessons, lane swimming, leisure swimming and plays host to prestigious swimming events each year.
Bev Baker, aquatics manager at SIV, said: "At SIV we are committed to encouraging as many people as possible to take up sports, and swimming is no exception. It's therefore great that we are bucking the national trend and seeing more and more people take to the pools.
"SIV also has a strong reputation for hosting national and international aquatics events, so spectators are able to witness elite swimmers like Rebecca Adlington and Jo Jackson in action and this really heightens interest in the elite end of the sport."
The announcement also comes at SIV launch a campaign to encourage even more people in Sheffield to get in the water.
Bev added: "Because of the variety of swimming activities we offer across our pools, there really is something for everyone - whether you are new to the water or an experienced swimmer, old or young, we can cater for all. We are continually looking at our programme of swimming to make sure we are giving as many people as possible the chance to take part in aquatic activities.
"Swimming is also extremely beneficial for your health as it strengthens heart muscles and provides an excellent cardiovascular workout, as well as improving psychological wellbeing."
SIV operates venues in Sheffield including Ponds Forge International Sports Centre, Concord Sports Centre, Hillsborough Leisure Centre and Westfield Sports Centre.
