Signing up for sport and leisure
Kent-based special needs charity, Signalong, has released its latest manual of signing. At the Leisure Centre provides signs, some of them based on British Sign Language and others created by the charity, for sports activities in leisure centres.
The new book has signs covering general vocabulary and individual sport and fitness activities and equipment. It also contains a section of coaching sentences, with the key words highlighted to help people with communication difficulties to understand instructions.
Signalong has received an Awards For All grant from the Lottery fund to pay for the development of a special training course and training manual for teachers.
Key workers will pass on signing skills to colleagues and volunteers, the aim being to open sport and leisure up to people whose language difficulties exclude them from many aspects of normal life.
